“Way of the Bird” Exhibition.
Sala de Actos de la Biblioteca Municipal C/ San Jerónimo s/n (click for area map) from 7th to 24th of
June
When this book came into our hands, we thought it was a brilliant idea.
Then we liked its message and we immediately thought about translating
it into Basque and Spanish. We’d like all the kids who are
starting to surf to see it. All Die Hard surfers out there should read
it also.
The story tells in a simple way how a veteran surfer transmits his
passion for surfing to a young kid who’s just started to surf.
Principles such us respect for Nature, for the rest of the surfers, for
the ocean when it gets big and humility, are part of this simple and
aesthetic book. We are editing it in Basque and Spanish for you to
enjoy it, show it to your children, or just get to know this two
artists’ work, they are for sure a relevant reference in the surf
art scene.

The exhibition will consist of the original drafts, photography and
other elements used to produce the book. You will also have the chance
to purchase the presented works from these two prestigious artists!!
It’s the first time they show their work in our country,
don’t miss the chance, it’s a good occasion to buy these
outstanding artists’ works at bargain price, because we’re
sure ¡¡they’ll be impossible to find in the future!!
Andrew Kidman
He started to write for surf magazines when he was 15 years old.
At 18, became Waves magazine’s editor in Australia, where he
worked for 6 years. That’s where he met Mark Shuterland, creator
of the Gonad Man comic, and Jon Frank, a brilliant photographer. After
leaving Waves, he had the idea of making a surf film and he created
Litmus,
with the contribution of Jon Frank’s photography and Mark
Shuterland’s animation short film called “Dream”. He
continued to create songs, images and a second film,
Glass Love.
He also produced a making off, photo and interview book on this film.
These days, Andy keeps writing songs and articles for publications such
as Surfer’s Journal o The Surfer’s Path, magazines that he
reckons reflect surfing’s reality in a fair way. Andrew Kidman
will be with during the 5 Surfilm Festibal to set up his exhibition and
play some tunes for us on his acoustic guitar during the party at Doka
on Friday.
Andy Davis
At 22, Andy created a clothing brand called “Free”, whose
popularity and growth became bigger than Andy could handle. Later, his
designs for “Toes on the Nose” and “Byrd
Clothing” became part of the surfing icons and they reached
outstanding success in Japan, back in 2003. After a period dedicated to
exhibitions in cities like San Francisco, Rome and New York. and also
taking some time to surf, he created “Freebyrd Clothing” ,
a brand to replace the former two. Along with Andrew Kidman, Andy
created “Way of the Bird” , a children story book.
The list hasn’t stopped growince since , making Andy’s dreams come true.
