The city and the sea, architecture and waves: surfurbanism.
The
city of San Sebastián has always attracted me not so much for its
decaying Belle Époque aura but for its powerful storms that send cars
flying all over the place and destroys street furniture. On the other
hand in the last years I’ve been surprised by the changes in the Gros
part of the city, not so much because of the Kursaal but for the
explosion of surfing. It’s a part of town that reminds me a lot of some
Californian surf cities but without losing its donostiarra personality:
surfers crossing the streets dressed in their wetsuits board under
hand, surf and skate shops, new young art galleries and even a bar or
two that reminds of Santa Monica…
In my last exhibitions
there’s a latent threat, you can feel the catastrophe, burning
buildings, massive waves wiping out entire cities… I think that all
that’s got to do with this traumatic change of century that we have
endured: this crazy weather that is bring hurricanes to Europe, the
economic crisis, 11-S… all this makes for an atmosphere of apocalypse
that permeates me and shows on my paintings.
PABLO UGARTETXEA (Bilbao, 1967)
I studied Fine Arts at Bilbao University, London and Amsterdam.
I
mix drawing, photography, oil painting and textures in my paintings… I
don’t believe in the disciplines of the different techniques. I’m very
demanding with the materials: I buy hand made paper in India and the
ink in London.
Among my favourite artists I have to name
Piccasso (the inventor of the collage), David Hockney, Andy Warhol...
And Matisse’s and Rothko’s colour.
I do art exhibitions regularly in Spain, France and the U.S.A..
Asier Elcoroiribe exhibition
Aquarium Donostia – San Sebastián
Pl. Carlos Blasco de Imaz
15/05/2009 – 14/06/2009
This
exhibition pays tribute to the figure and works of Asier Elcoroiribe
Lerma, a painter from San Sebastian. The paintings shown consist of a
small selection aimed to represent the whole of this great artist’s
creations.
All along these years, Asier Elcoroiribe painted
and presented his paintings to his closest friends, family and a
faithful group of people who admired his work.
Now all of
them have joined efforts to share with the public in this city some of
the pieces created by Asier that they cherish so much.
Most
of the paintings are acrylic although he also used oil, watercolor and
mixed techniques. The ocean, the waves and Donostia-San Sebastian are
the subjects that most inspired this artist, they are the central theme
of the exhibition, nevertheless it includes as well other pieces such
as portraits, landscapes etc.
Asier Elcoroiribe’s life
revolved around paintings and surfing. His passing last
year meant a great loss for everybody
around him.
His way of understanding life has left a lasting trace on all of those
who met him.
His works are part of the legacy Asier left us and he will always be
remembered through them.
