Hi
Shredability
Thomas Campbell
VBS TV, USA 2008
Dur: 15:03 min.
The state of Thomas Campbell's desk says a lot about his work habits.
It is covered in scrapes of paper, paint, photos, leaves, pieces of
thread, books, doodles, and cups full of brushes, pens, and pencils.
The pile is six inches deep and covers the entire desk, spilling onto
the walls and floor and growing by a factor of 12.5 percent every day
(we guestimate). He is working on so many different projects all at
once we're not sure how he keeps it all straight. Some end up getting
finished, framed, and hung on a white wall, while others are dropped to
the floor and maybe picked up days or years later and turned into
something totally new.
Musica Surfica
Mick Sowry
Australia 2008
Dur: 45 min.
MUSICA SURFICA is a documentary which involves a unique gathering of
classical musicians and surfers, with a purpose to opening minds to new
ideas by demonstrating the benefits of taking risks in their art.
Shot on King Island in Southern Australia, the documentary follows one
man’s creative journey, Richard Tognetti, leading violinist and
Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as he seeks new
inspiration from traditional and classical music.
He teams up with
Derek Hynd, one of the world’s most influential surfers, who challenges
him (and 2 time world champion, Tom Carroll, under 18 World No 2 Heath
Joske and others) to ride an un-finned surfboard, which demands fresh
thinking, or ancient methods, to keep control.

Surfwise
Doug Pray,
USA 2007
Dur: 90 min
.
Don't be fooled by the title. Surfwise is much more than a surfing
movie. It chronicles the amazing journey of "Doc" Paskowitz, his nine
kids and his beautiful and understanding wife Juliette. After two
failed marriages, the doc packs up his "normal" life and goes Bohemian,
living off the earth while teaching people how to surf. The highly
religious man meets his life partner in Juliette and they immediately
start having kids - one after the other, until nine. But that's where
the normalcy ends. They travel around the country in a 24' cramped
trailer – all eleven of them, eating healthy, the kids getting home
schooled, surfing everyday. To make money, the Paskowitz' start a surf
school. As was the case with "Doc," the kids became champion surfers
and the family was profiled numerous times in magazine articles and
television segments. Although many outsiders found this nomadic
lifestyle idyllic, the kids started to rebel against "Doc."

Sliding
Liberia
Britton Caillouette & Nicholai Lidow
USA 2008
Dur: 48 min.
"Sliding Liberia" is a film that crosses genres. Conceived of by
Stanford filmmaker Britton Caillouette and Stanford PhD student
Nicholai Lidow, this surf film/social documentary follows a group of
young surfers to Liberia in search of more than perfect waves.
As they travel through the West African country, devastated by decades
of brutal civil war, they record the stories of people they meet along
the way––people like Alfred, a young boy who became Liberia's first
surfer after finding a bodyboard while fleeing from rebels. Besides
rediscovering a world-class point break, the surfers find something
much more important––a way to travel responsibly in the 21st century.
