Last January, a Korduroy expedition landed in Euskadi to film a documentary on our homeland and its relationship with the sea, with the surf. The project, sponsored by Patagonia and Campy Camper and co-produced by Etxepare and Surfilmfestibal, is part of the International Day for the promotion of Basque language abroad – it is about to see the light.

The Surfer's Path, one of the leading European magazines, is publishing a report of approximately 10 pages written by Cyrus Sutton, with photos by Iker Basterretxea (Roke Photography) and Marc Gassó of one of the best sessions last winter in Mundaka.

After 15 days of intense recording along the coast the result is Basque Holiday and Home Land, two completely different but complementary pieces. Basque Holiday is a 3 minutes short-film with the best of Ryan Burch and Cyrus Sutton’s surfing during those days. Ryan, at 24 years old, represents the most futuristic surfing; he shapes his own asymmetric boards and travels around the world soaking up every place. This was his first visit to the Basque Country and he was lucky enough to surf Mundaka in very good conditions, sharing many barrels with all the locals who could not believe the way he surfs his bizarre boards.

The conditions favoured us for two weeks, and Mundaka tubazos was not the only good thing they experienced thanks to the locals who made their route easier: Peta, Jokin, Clovis, Gaizka, and many other friends. Thank you all! Basque Holiday will be online very soon korduroy.tv

But it wasn’t all just about salt; we wanted them to get to know the place, the people, the language, the art and the culture, the merger between all of these and the surf, which is the way we relate with the ocean and the world today. This is what we’ll see in Home Land, the documentary-film premiering at Surfilmfestibal 11.
