We are very pleased to present you the event we have organised in Mundaka for this Saturday, September 3rd, within the frame of our project to support surf culture on the Cantabric Sea: The Amstel Surfari.

It’s almost 10 years since we first started to work on our surf culture, amped and filled with passion. What started in 2003 as a humble film festival at the Aquarium, in San Sebastian, after 9 editions has become a driven, bizarre surf culture festival, which showcases the most authentic and original sides of our local and global surf culture.

On the way, with all of you –our loyal public- we have discovered the best surfing, the best waves, the best surfers, all with a common link: creativity.

We still recall how amazed the public was during the screening of Patrick Treftz’s The Thread, at the Kursaal Terraces in 2006. Edu Zips came to us totally blown away and said: “These drawings look like NAZCA, they’re absolutely mind-blowing!!!! Who’s this guy??” Of course, we were stoked to see such an adrenaline filled reaction from our buddy Edu!!

Through Patrick Trefz, we met Jim Denevan in one of his trips to Europe, and that’s how we came up with the idea of organizing an intervention on one of our most symbolic sandy areas, Mundaka, which produces one of the best waves in the world. Barrels that break over a perfect bar, which have already placed Mundaka on the maps of the best surf trips around the world.

A tricky river-mouth, it requires very specific conditions to break, and when it does, hundreds of surfers from all over the coast gather there, as well as many foreigners during the fall. It is a very fragile ecosystem, and in 2004-2005 we were given proof that any unmeasured human action can alter its nature, ruining the wave.

Denevan’s work is a true environmental manifesto, which will be dragging everybody’s attention to the sand, to the wonderful natural formation of the river-mouth that allows this wave to break, a unique jewel on our coastline.

He will start drawing around 10,30 am, and he will finish at low tide at 14.58. The majestic work will start to disappear the moment it is finished, covered by the rising tide, vanishing completely at high tide.
